My Husband Of 31 Years

“There’s a third document.”

The room went completely still.

The other woman actually smiled at first, like she thought it was just another version of the same thing. The lawyer opened a sealed envelope he’d set aside before the meeting and explained that it wasn’t a will at all. It was a notarized statement my husband had signed two days before he died, after being discharged from the hospital the first time.

His cardiologist had documented concerns about medication, confusion, and impaired judgment during the weeks leading up to his death.

The lawyer read my husband’s words aloud. He admitted he’d been involved with the woman for several years. He admitted she’d been pressuring him to rewrite his estate plans. Most importantly, he stated that any documents signed during the previous month were not to be considered an expression of his final wishes if questions about his competency arose.

Then he named the attorney who had prepared the second will.

My husband’s longtime attorney hadn’t prepared it.

A lawyer the other woman had recommended had.

The smile disappeared from her face.

What followed took months, not minutes. The second will was challenged. Medical records were reviewed. Witnesses were interviewed. The attorney who drafted the new document eventually withdrew from the case rather than testify.

The affair had been real. The relationship had been real. But the second will didn’t survive scrutiny.

The part that hurt most wasn’t the money.

It was when my son finally admitted they’d known about her. Not because they approved. They’d been terrified. Their father had convinced them he was going to leave me eventually and begged them not to tell me until he had “sorted everything out.”

They were ashamed. I was furious.

A year later, the estate was settled according to the valid will my husband had kept for decades.

I still lost the man I thought I’d been married to.

No court ruling ever gave that back.
