PART 2 — THE DOCUMENTS
I was in the middle of cancer treatment when my insurance suddenly stopped working, and that was how I found out my husband had divorced me in secret and married another woman three weeks later. He told me there was nothing I could do, and he blocked my number.
Then the hospital administrator asked me to come downstairs. An elderly woman was waiting for me. It was my husbands own mother, and she was holding a folder against her chest like it was something precious.
Inside were the original documents. And on every one, my signature was a forgery. My husband had faked my name to push through a divorce I never agreed to, while I was too sick to stand, so he could marry the other woman and move my coverage and our assets out of my reach.
He thought a dying wife would be too weak to fight, and he never imagined the one who would hand me the proof would be his own mother.
She had found the papers in his desk, she told me, and she could not look at herself in the mirror if she stayed silent. You fought for your life, she said. The least I can do is help you fight for the truth.
A divorce built on a forged signature is no divorce at all. My lawyer took the documents to court. The second marriage, built on top of a lie, collapsed. My insurance was restored, backdated, every treatment covered, because legally I had never stopped being his wife.
My husband answered for the forgery. The woman he married on a fraud left him once the money turned out to be mine. And I kept fighting the only battle that ever truly mattered, the one in the treatment chair, and this past spring my scans came back clear.
His mother comes to my appointments now. She holds my hand in the waiting room. I lost a husband who was never worth keeping, and I gained a mother who was. I will take that trade every single time.
