Seventeen Calls

PART 2 — SEVENTEEN CALLS

He slapped me across the face at his own birthday dinner for asking who kept texting him, and his mother laughed and said I had finally learned my place. I did not say a word. I picked up my coat and walked out, and I did not go back that night.

The next morning my phone rang seventeen times. It was his mother. When I finally answered, she was crying so hard I could barely understand her, until she got the words out. Please, she said. I opened his phone, and I found out what he has been doing.

She had seen the messages. Another woman, yes, but far more than that. Money moved out of our accounts. Messages about how he would take the children and leave me with nothing, and lies he had told his own mother for years to keep her money flowing to him.

The woman who told me I had learned my place had just learned that her son was a liar to her face and a danger to me, and the proof was glowing in her hand.

But I did not go back to him. A man who raises his hand to his wife at a dinner table has shown you exactly who he is, and I believed him. I went back only to his mothers kitchen, to sit with her, and to photograph every message on that phone.

A slap is not a disagreement. It is assault. With his mothers evidence and my own account, I went to a lawyer and to the police, and I left that marriage for good, with a protective order and a clear path to keep my children safe.

His mother stood with me, not with him. She said she would rather lose a son to the truth than help him break another woman.

I did not get my place back. I got something better. A life where no one lays a hand on me, no one laughs while they do it, and the only calls I answer are the ones I actually want. I am not going back. I am going forward.
