June Twenty Twenty Three

I scrolled back to June of 2023 with my heart in my throat, certain I was about to see my marriage end in a photograph. What I saw instead put me on the bathroom floor for a different reason.

My husband Jason was not alone in the pictures. He was in a treatment chair, with an IV line in his arm, and Derek was sitting beside him holding a cup of ice chips.

There were dozens of them. Jason in waiting rooms. Jason with a paper bracelet. Jason thinner than I remembered him being that summer, in a ball cap I never saw him wear at home. Derek had driven him to every appointment for four months in the summer of 2023 and brought him home before I got off work, and the two of them had kept it from me completely.

Jason had been sick. Seriously sick. And he had decided, with a stubbornness I will be arguing with him about for the rest of our lives, that he would not let me spend what might have been our last good year watching him and bracing for the worst. The prognosis had been uncertain at the start. By the time it turned good, he had buried the whole thing so deep he did not know how to dig it back up.

My husband faced the scariest year of his life smiling at me across the dinner table so I would not be afraid.

Derek was the only one who knew. Jason swore him to it, and Derek kept that promise even though it nearly broke him, because a best man keeps his word. But carrying it alone for two years had worn a hole in him, and when he stayed with us he decided I deserved the truth more than Jason deserved the secret. He could not say it to my face, so he left me the phone and a note and let me find it after he was gone.

You have been better to me than I deserve, Derek had said at the door. He meant he was about to hand me the thing my husband had hidden, and he did not know if I would thank him or hate him for it.

I thanked him. I called him crying and thanked him. Then I went to Jason and held my healthy, stubborn, infuriating husband and told him he was never allowed to protect me like that again. He is cancer free, two years clear. We do the follow up scans together now. No more secrets in the tank.
