The Edge Of The Mat

My former mother-in-law was sitting at my kitchen table when the call came in, which is the only reason she heard it too, and I think that changed everything.

Avas stepbrother, twelve years old, called from his room with the door shut.

“Tell Ava I tried,” he said. “I hid Dads golf shoes so he could not play and would come to the test. He borrowed a pair at the course.” Then, fast, before his nerve went: “And I know why he really picked golf. I heard him on the phone.”

I put it on speaker without thinking. My mother-in-law went still.

“He said, the karate thing is her mothers deal, I never got into it. He said, these golf guys are worth knowing, it is good for business, and Ava will get her belt with or without me sitting there.”

With or without me. On the day his daughter earned a black belt she had worked years for.

His own mother sat at my table and heard her son trade his daughters biggest day for a foursome and some business cards, and something in her face closed like a door.

For three years this woman told me I made too much of Avas things. She did not say it this time. She picked up her own phone, called her son, and I heard her tell him, in a voice I had never once heard her use, that she was ashamed of how she raised him and she would not be making his excuses to that child anymore.

Then she asked me if she could come to everything from now on. Every test, every tournament. She has not missed one since.

Ava earned that belt in a full dojo and bowed to an empty spot on the mat, then bowed to me and her grandmother, and her grandmother bowed back so deep the whole room noticed.

Her father texted that night. So proud of my little warrior. Ava set the phone in her gym bag and asked for frozen custard and never said his name.

But she has a grandmother in the front row now who used to think a girls things were too much, and who found out the hard way that the too-much was always the point.

And she has a twelve year old stepbrother who hid a mans golf shoes for her, which is a black belt move if I ever saw one.
