She was spreading overdue bills across the table.
“If I lose the house, I dont know what I will do,” her aunt was saying.
My niece had her little purse open. Birthday money lay beside an electricity bill.
I said her name.
She looked up, frightened.
“I almost have enough.”
Her aunt began to cry. “I was only talking. I didnt realize she—”
“But she heard you,” I said quietly.
I gathered my nieces money and waited while she put it back in her purse.
On the drive home, she told me she had been skipping food because groceries cost money. She thought every weekend visit made things worse.
I could not explain every change I had noticed from that conversation alone. But I could make one thing clear.
“You are never responsible for paying an adults bills.”
We stopped the visits while the adults addressed what had happened.
Her aunt later returned a small envelope my niece had secretly left behind, with an apology.
At their next lunch together, months later, my niece ordered what she wanted.
Nobody mentioned the price.
Her aunt asked about school and listened to the answer.
