PART 3 — TAPE

Mark called me at midnight. His voice did not sound like his own.

He had come home, found the envelope on his pillow, and pressed play. He heard his mothers voice, confused and frightened on one of our Tuesday drives, saying that Vanessa kept asking her to sign things she did not understand, and that money kept leaving her account after Vanessa visited.

On the April ninth recording, his mother said it plainly. Vanessa is taking it. I am scared to say so. Please do not let her know I told.

I had spent four months quietly protecting a frightened old woman, and my own husband had told me to apologize or go home.

I did not take any of it to Mark to win a fight. I took it to protect his mother. The next morning we sat down together, with her doctor and a lawyer who handles these things, and we put real safeguards around her money and her name.

Vanessa had to answer for what she had done. The family did it the right way, through the proper channels, so his mother was made whole and protected going forward. There was no screaming match. There did not need to be.

Mark apologized to me at that kitchen table with tears in his eyes. He said he had looked at the frosting on the ground and chosen his sister over his wife without even asking me a question. He promised he never would again.

Vanessa broke the cake that day. But the thing she had really been breaking was an old womans trust, one signature at a time. And that, at last, is mended.
