PART 2 — THE TICKET STUB
The old man in the Navy cap laid an old ticket stub next to Bryces plate and looked at him steady. Son, I was in the top row that Friday night in October. Do you want to know what your sister-in-law did while you were still sitting at home.
Bryce did not answer. So the old man told the whole table.
That October night, after the football game, after the crowd had gone home, the janitor was closing up the way she did every night. Behind the concession stand she smelled gas, strong and wrong. A line had cracked under the old building.
She did not shrug it off. She got the few people still in the gym out the doors, she called it in, and she went back inside twice to be sure no stragglers were left in the locker rooms before the fire crew arrived. The chief said later that if she had locked up and gone home like any tired person would, that building could have gone up with the early practice crews in it the next morning.
The woman Bryce called a mop-pusher had smelled a gas leak in an empty school and cleared the whole place out alone, in the dark, and never said a word about it at any dinner.
The old man in the Navy cap had been in the top row that night, waiting on his grandson, and he had watched the whole thing. He had been trying to find out who she was ever since. Bryces own mother had brought him to Thanksgiving without knowing he was the one.
I had been passing the sweet potatoes, trying not to look at him, because I knew his face too.
Bryce, who made more on one crown than I make in a month, could not find a single thing to say.
My sister, who had laughed at his joke, stopped laughing. She looked at me like she was seeing me for the first time in years.
I have cleaned that high school at night for twenty years. Gym floors, bathrooms, bleachers. I never thought any of it mattered to anyone. It turned out one Friday night in October it mattered to everyone who walked through those doors the next week.
I am a janitor. I was ashamed of it for exactly one Thanksgiving. The old man in the Navy cap made sure it was the last time.
