El Paso

PART 3 — THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTO

My wife came down the stairs and sat at the kitchen table, and she told me what she had known for years.

In 2001, when I was stationed at Fort Bliss, I had been with a woman named Elena before I ever met my wife. Elena left one day holding an envelope she said she would mail later. She never did. What I did not know, what I could not have known, was that the envelope was going to tell me she was carrying my child.

She raised Michael alone in El Paso and never tried to find me. But years ago, Michael started searching, and the trail led to my wife first. My wife met him quietly, saw my face in his, and made a choice. She waited, so I would come to it in my own time, when a DNA test would make it undeniable and I could not talk myself out of it.

I had a son for twenty-four years and never knew it, and the woman I married had been quietly keeping the door open for him the whole time.

I was not angry with her. How could I be. She had carried my secret more gently than I would have carried it myself.

Tyler messaged his brother back that night. The three of us drove to El Paso that spring. Michael opened the door, and he had my jaw and my nose and his mothers kind eyes, and he said, I have been waiting my whole life to meet you.

Elena had passed two years before. She never got the reunion, but she raised a fine man, and she never once spoke a bitter word about me to him.

I have two sons now. Tyler gained a brother from a Christmas gag gift. And my wife, who kept the door open all those years, finally got to watch me walk through it.
