She kept staring at the photo like she was trying to decide whether to run or tell me the truth.
My son looked confused. I remember he laughed a little and said, “Yeah, that’s my dad. He’s in Denver this week.”
She went completely pale.
Then she asked quietly, “Your husband’s name is Richard?”
The second I said yes, she covered her mouth.
At that point I honestly thought maybe she’d worked with him before or something stupid and harmless like that. But she looked genuinely sick.
Finally she said, “I’m really sorry, but I’ve been seeing him for almost a year.”
Nobody spoke after that.
My son actually got angry at her first. Told her she was mistaken. That she must have the wrong guy. Then she pulled out her phone with shaking hands and showed us pictures.
Hotel selfies.
Restaurant receipts.
A photo of my husband standing in front of a cabin wearing the same jacket I bought him last Christmas.
My son just sat there staring at the table.
I asked her if she knew he was married and she started crying immediately. Apparently he told her he was divorced and living alone because his “crazy ex-wife” refused to sell the house after the separation.
Which honestly almost impressed me because the man had apparently invented an entire second life.
Then she said something that made my stomach drop even harder.
She met him through her father.
At work.
Because my husband had been mentoring her for months before things turned personal.
Suddenly all those “business trips” made sense. The late-night conference calls. Him suddenly caring about going to the gym again at 58 years old.
My son finally looked up and asked her, “Wait… how old are you?”
Twenty-four.
He got up and walked outside without another word.
The worst part is my husband came home the next morning still acting normal. Kissed me on the forehead, asked why nobody unloaded the dishwasher, then started talking about how exhausting his “trip” had been.
I just stood there watching him make coffee in our kitchen while his son sat outside in the driveway all night because he couldn’t even look at him anymore.
