My Son Fiancee Told

The next morning, my son called while I was scraping hardened frosting off rented cake stands in my kitchen sink. “If you keep bringing up the speech,” he said quietly, “you’re going to make things harder for my marriage.” Then he hung up before I answered.

I spent six months planning that wedding because Brianna said I had “more free time now” after retirement. I handled seating charts, vendor cancellations, hotel blocks, and even covered deposits myself when money got tight. During the reception, Brianna thanked nearly everyone by name, including the valet company owner, while I stood beside the kitchen doors holding unused place cards.

Two days later, the venue manager emailed me asking why the final balance still hadn’t been paid. Attached underneath was a forwarded message Brianna accidentally sent the wrong person. She wrote, “His mom already did the hard part for free. Stall her until the gifts clear.”

I drove to their apartment carrying the wedding binder I’d practically lived in for months. Brianna opened the door wearing my late mother’s pearl earrings she borrowed “just for the ceremony.” Before I could say anything, my son quietly admitted they were already behind on rent.

Then he explained why.

Most of the wedding gifts were gone because Brianna had secretly maxed out several credit cards during planning, including one opened in my son’s name three months before the wedding. Last week he returned my mother’s earrings inside a gas station sandwich bag. One clasp was broken, and there was still foundation makeup caught around the pearl setting.
