Swim For It

Inside the house, my dads phone started buzzing on the end table, and Pams hand came down slowly, because the vice president I did that service call for in Perrysburg was calling my father, and the mortgage Pam said the bank switched was about to be explained.

For years Pam ran that house and told me the bank moved Dads mortgage into my name to help his credit, and I paid it, believing her. This time the truth came from the bank itself, because a homeowner stood in the heat with me and asked the right question.

The man I did the service call for was a vice president at the bank that holds my dads mortgage, and when he heard my last name and that I had been paying that mortgage out of my own check since 2023, he told me the bank never switched anything, that Pam had simply been taking my money and calling it Dads mortgage while the loan stayed in his name alone.

The business card in my toolbag was his. When he pulled the file, there was no transfer, no help to Dads credit, just my paychecks disappearing into a story Pam made up. He called my father to tell him directly.

Pam threw four hundred dollars of gauges in the lake and told me to swim for it, sure I would be back the next night. She did not know the bank was already calling Dad. Her hand was still up in that little wave when his phone buzzed.

Jake took off his headset and asked what I was talking about. Pam said dramatic. Then Dad answered his phone.

I drove to a coworkers place, and at eight the next morning I passed my EPA certification exam with my used backup gauges, because Pam could sink a manifold but not a year of rooftop work.

I have my own license now, and a job with a mechanical contractor across town. Whatever Pam did with the money she took in Dads name is between her, Dad, and the bank now, on paper, where swim for it does not help her.

My dad called me that week, off the recliner for once, asking how much I had paid and how he never noticed. We are figuring it out, the two of us.

The bank didnt switch anything, the man told me. It did not. And Pams hand froze in the air before Dads phone finished buzzing, because the truth reached him from the bank before she could spin it.
