PART 3 — TREE
At 7:15 Christmas morning my phone started ringing. Derek. Then Amber. Then Sandra, three times. Then a text from Derek. Bill. Please come home.
They had opened the small red box under the tree. Inside were three documents. The deed to the house, from 1979, with Margarets name and mine. The prenuptial agreement Sandra had signed in 2023, at her own lawyers office, her idea, keeping the house mine. And a letter from my attorney dated five days earlier.
Because three weeks before Christmas I had overheard Sandra and Derek in my kitchen, planning what they would do with my house and my accounts once the old man goes into a home.
They told me I was just a guest in the house I bought and raised three children in, never dreaming I had already heard exactly what they were planning for me.
I did not drive home that morning to scream. I let them sit with those three documents a while first. Then I came home, calm as the snow, and told them how things were going to be.
The house was mine and would pass to my own three children. Sandra had signed away any claim to it years ago, by her own choice. And there would be no putting the old man anywhere. The old man was staying right where he was, in his own home, with his wits fully about him.
I gave Sandra a choice. She could be my wife, honestly, or she could go with the children who had put her up to it. She wept and swore she never meant it. But I had heard her with my own ears in my own kitchen.
I spent the rest of that Christmas quietly, with Margarets angel back on top of the tree where it belonged. A man can be lonely in a full house. I would rather be at peace in my own.
