He Never Once Mentioned Renting a Storage Unit

I rolled up the door of unit 31, dreading heartbreak, and the light fell on a beautiful wooden chest, and beside it, on shelves, dozens of sealed envelopes, each addressed in Walters hand to one of our grandchildren, by name, and dated years into the future.

I opened the chest with trembling hands. It was full of letters, and small keepsakes, and photographs.

Real particular that no one be added but him, the man had said, and now I understood, my Walter was preparing his own words for grandchildren not yet grown, and he could not let anyone find them and spoil the surprise, least of all himself.

My Walter had written a letter to each of our grandchildren for every big day of their lives he knew he might not live to see. A letter for each graduation. Each wedding. Each first heartbreak. Each new baby. Dozens of letters, so their grandfather could speak to them, in his own words, on every milestone to come.

His letter to me, on top of the chest, read: Old girl, my heart is not going to last as long as these babies need their grandpa. So I did the only thing I could. I wrote them each a letter for every big day ahead, so I can be there even when I am gone. I hid them here and told the folks to add nobody but me, because you know I cannot keep a secret, I would have read them all aloud at Thanksgiving. Hand them out at the right times for me. Let the grandkids hear from their grandpa on every happy day. Love, Walter.

I wept in that unit, holding letters my husband wrote to grandchildren for days decades away, weddings and graduations he knew he would never attend.

Particular that no one be added, because he could not keep the surprise otherwise, and he meant these letters to arrive over a lifetime.

I have been delivering them ever since, at the right moments. When our oldest grandson graduated, I gave him the envelope with his name and that year, and he read his grandfathers words and wept and hugged me hard. When our granddaughter married, another letter, Grandpa at her wedding after all.

There are letters in that chest that will not be opened for twenty years yet. I will hand out every one, and I have asked my daughter to keep delivering them when I am gone, so Walter goes on loving these children for decades.

My daughter did not know why I drove out to Route 11. Now she knows her daddy found a way to be at every milestone this family will ever have. Particular that no one be added, so the surprise would keep. He is at every wedding, every graduation, still. My devoted Walter saw to it.
