When I Opened My Locker

I asked him what he meant by “keeping your stuff simpler,” but he already had one shoe on and seemed more interested in tightening the laces than talking to me. He just shrugged and said, “I dunno, your daughter explained it better.”

I told him I don’t have a daughter.

That finally made him look up at me properly. He got quiet after that and muttered something about maybe confusing me with another member, but he still kept glancing at the laminated workout sheet clipped inside my locker like he knew exactly which locker belonged to who.

I stood there a minute trying to figure out what was actually different. At first it just looked cleaner. More organized maybe. Then I realized all the random things I normally kept stuffed in the corners were gone completely.

No extra sweatshirt. No old earbuds tangled in the side pocket. No aspirin bottle rolling around at the bottom.

Instead there were clear plastic containers with printed labels:
MONDAY
POST-WORKOUT
MORNING MEDS

Not my labels.

Somebody had even replaced my beat-up water bottle with one of those oversized handled cups older people carry everywhere now.

The laminated workout schedule bothered me most though because it wasn’t my routine. I’ve done the same machines in mostly the same order for years. Treadmill first, then bikes if my knee isn’t acting up.

This schedule had things blocked out by time.

Hydration break — 9:10
Stretching reminder — seated
Locker check before departure

Like somebody was managing a field trip.

I finally walked up to the front desk carrying the laminated page because I figured maintenance or staff had mixed up lockers somehow. The girl working there looked confused the second she saw it.

Then she said, “Oh, I thought your family already talked to you about the wellness transition program.”

I asked her what program.

She turned her monitor a little too quickly after that and said maybe she should get her manager instead.

While she walked to the back office, I noticed my emergency contact form sitting half-visible beside the keyboard.

My son’s number was still there.

But underneath it somebody had added:
Authorized wellness support access approved November.
