WHO SIGNED FOR MORT’S LETTER

Bea from the post office counter looked around my shop, slow, from face to face, and then she lifted her hand and pointed. The person who signed for Morts last certified letter in 2024, the one Mort never saw, was his own son, Bryce.

Bryce did not just ignore my certified letter, he had intercepted his dying fathers mail a year earlier, signing for a letter from Morts lawyer so his father would never read what was in it.

Jerome the lawyer had already saved my building. Bryce, this is a certified mail receipt, postmarked in Chillicothe, May 28th, addressed to your office, tracking shows it was delivered and signed for. I dont care what it says, I never read it, Bryce said. Jerome tapped the lease, section 19, notice counts on the day its mailed, not the day you open it, Mr. Brenneman exercised his option three days early, this building was never yours to sell. The chains regional manager unclipped his badge, we dont buy lawsuits, and walked to his car.

Then Bea raised her hand from the back and said mine was not the first certified letter she stamped for that office, that back in 2024 Morts lawyer mailed one the week before Mort died, somebody signed for it, and Mort never saw it, and she pointed at Bryce.

I am Lyle Brenneman, seventy-four. I have run a tire shop on Bridge Street in Chillicothe since 1987, and I rented that building from Mort for thirty-eight years, a handshake guy, rent in cash on the first. In 2016 Mort wrote me a ten-year lease with an option to buy the building for a hundred eighty thousand, Lyle, nobodys earned it more. Mort died in 2024, and his son Bryce took over, drives a white Tahoe, calls everybody chief. This spring Ellen and I emptied our savings and got a loan approved, and I mailed my option letter myself. Six weeks later Bryce pulled in, your options dead, deadline was May 31st, I never got anything, youre a grease monkey with a calendar problem, the chains paying me six hundred forty thousand.

I did not argue. But that night I went back to the shop and found the certified mail receipt in my cigar box and put it in my wallet behind my license.

Certified notice counts the day it is mailed, and my receipt was postmarked May 28th, three days before the deadline, delivered and signed for. My option was exercised. The building was never Bryces to sell.

And Bea remembered the 2024 letter from Morts lawyer the week before Mort died, which Bryce signed for and his father never saw. What was in it, once it came to light, was Morts own instructions confirming my option and his wish that I get the building, intercepted by a son who signed his dying fathers mail to keep it from him. Forging a signature on certified mail is a federal matter, and Bryce faced it.

The building is mine now, for a hundred eighty thousand, the price Mort set when he said nobodys earned it more. Bryce faced the law, not my anger, for the sale he had no right to make and the letter he signed in his fathers place.

A grease monkey with a calendar problem, Bryce called me. I mailed my letter three days early and kept the receipt, the way Mort kept every handshake. The shop on Bridge Street is mine at last, and Ill stay for coffee with the next young fella who rents the bay, the way Mort always did with me.
