WHOSE ID WAS ON IT

The letter from the postmaster had a copy of the signature on the green card and the carrier ID of whoever delivered that certified eviction notice. I carried mail for thirty-two years. I knew that ID. It belonged to Jareds cousin, a carrier out of my own old station, who faked the delivery and forged my name.

My son-in-law did not just lie in court, he had a cousin inside the post office sign my name for a letter I never got, while I lay in a hospital bed, so he could take the house I had already paid him for.

The judge had already dismissed the eviction. Sir, the judge told Jared, this card says Loretta signed for your letter on June 3rd, this paper says she was in the hospital from May 31st to June 6th with pneumonia. It was my discharge sheet. I was on oxygen that day, I said, I couldnt walk to my own mailbox. Then I told the court what every carrier knows, a certified letter has to be signed for at the door by the person or their agent, and the Post Office keeps a copy of the signature. Well be requesting that record, the judge said, and told Jared that signing someone elses name for federal mail is a very serious matter.

Two weeks later the postmasters letter came, with the signature and the carrier ID, and I knew exactly whose it was.

I am Loretta, seventy-one. I carried mail in Dothan for thirty-two years, walking route first, then a rural route past the peanut fields. I know mail, and I know every rule about it. When my husband passed in 2020 I fell behind on the house payment, and my son-in-law Jared offered to help me refinance and said the bank needed his name on the deed too, so I signed where he pointed, and Ive paid him six hundred fifty dollars every month since, in cash because he asked for cash. This spring he and my daughter decided they wanted the house, you dont need three bedrooms, Loretta, and I said no.

Then a court paper was taped to my door, eviction, saying Id been notified by certified mail and refused to move, and I had never seen any notice. You got it, you signed for it, Jared said, youre a deadbeat old woman who thinks the rules dont apply to her. Terry said just take the thirty days. I did not argue. I dug my hospital discharge sheet out of the drawer and put it in my pocketbook.

Certified mail keeps a signature and a carrier ID, and the ID on that delivery was Jareds cousin, a carrier I had worked near, who signed my name to a card while I was on oxygen two towns away. Forging a signature on federal certified mail is a federal crime, and the carrier faced the Postal Inspectors for it, and Jared faced the law for the scheme.

The eviction was dead, because I could not have signed for a letter from a hospital bed, and the whole refinance arrangement, with cash payments and his name slipped onto my deed, got a long hard look it did not survive.

Whos going to listen to you, Jared might as well have asked. A judge listened. A postmaster listened. Thirty-two years of carrying mail taught me exactly which record to ask for. I knew that carrier ID the second I saw it. You can forge a widows name on a green card, but you cannot forge it past a widow who sorted that same mail for thirty-two years.
